3. CTN lunch and lecture - London, 16 June 2008

"Keep it simple," urged Andrew Phillips, OBE, speaking up for common sense in charity regulation, at CTN's third annual lunch and lecture, which was generously sponsored by CCLA at Church House, Westminster on Monday 16th June.

Over 250 trustees attended the event, which included stimulating seminars on a range of current issues as well as a delicious networking lunch and lecture by Andrew Phillips, OBE, former life peer, solicitor, journalist, founder of Bates, Wells and Braithwaite, the Citizenship Foundation, the solicitors' Pro-Bono Group and The Phillips Fund, as well as a trustee, president and patron of a wide range of charities.

His lecture was entitled 'Don't let the b******s get you down!' In it he called on trustees to exercise common sense in the governance and management of charites so as not to let themselves be overwhelmed by regulations and legislation.  In attendance were the Chief Executive of the Charity Commission, the Compact, and the Directory of Social Change (DSC), as well as representatives of the Office of the Third Sector, the National Council of Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), almost all of whose work was touched upon in Mr Phillips' examination of the burden of bureaucracy on charities today.

Copies of the presentations accompanying the event's seminars are below, as is a copy of Mr Phillips's speech.
