When I became a trustee, my training in the role was a quick chat with the Chair. And a year later I was asked to be Chair without any particular briefing about what that meant.
Learning from this, I have now developed an induction pack for new trustees, based on the National Occupational Standards for Trustees. I work through this with new trustees and then try to meet up with them after about 6 months to check how things are going. I am currently arranging a workshop for my Board so that all trustees understand their responsibilities regarding financial management. We have an experienced finance committee and the tendency is for the rest of us to rely on them to look after the finances, and that is not good enough!
