How many hours do you set aside for the work of a trusteeship?

This weeks Trustee of the Week, Roseline Ndora, asks, "How many hours do you set aside for the work of a trusteeship?"
When I took on the role of trustee I decided that I could spend 3 hours a week on it. I told the manager of the charity and she was happy with that level of commitment. I keep a record of the time I spend and it has worked out as more hours - probably 4 or 5 a week. Our Trustee board meets 11 times a year and I chair the Finance Committee which meets 4 times a year. I've also been providing support for fundraising. Some weeks it feels like a bit too much. For example this week I have been to the charity's office twice and this has taken up 8 hours of my time. However, there are occasional weeks when I don't have to do anything. More importantly I am gaining from the experience of being a trustee and my contribution to the charity is appreciated. As long as this continues to be the case I am prepared to put in the extra effort. I will be really interested to hear how much time other trustees spend on the role. I know some trustee boards meet far less frequently than ours (particularly in the larger charities) and I wonder if this means that trustees spend less time on the role.
