How do you increase fund raising awareness within a board?

 Maurizio Fantato asks

"With greater competition for funds available how do you increase fund raising awareness within a board?"

I think you have to start off by finding out what the existing awareness of fundraising within the board is. Fundraising covers so many different activities.

Most people think fundraising is the community activities we see all around us and in the media, eg people holding collecting tins, sponsored walks etc. But fundraising encompasses so much more: charitable trusts, statutory funding, corporate sponsorship, raising money from individuals etc. It is becoming an increasingly specialised and professional field.

Once you know what the board members' current understanding of fundraising is you can build on that.

There are some useful resources such as the Institute of Fundraising's "Trustees Guide to Fundraising". (Available to download free at their website under "information about fundraising"). The Giving Campaign also published a really
good overview guide which you can download from their website.

The most important things for trustees to remember is that they are ambassadors for the charity and that fundraising is all about people. The people they already know could be a great source of support. The more people they talk to about what your charity does the more money they can help to raise.
