Developing the Role of Volunteers in the UK - London

Event runs between 10:40 and 15:15

An opportunity to discuss and be informed on current thinking, to investigate case studies for ideas and insights on volunteering in Britain.

Under the Coalition Government there has been great emphasis in the role of volunteers in helping to create the ‘Big Society’. In light of this, funding has been made available to build supporting civil society infrastructure through initiatives such as the Social Action Fund and the Community First Programme. Yet there remains considerable work to do to ensure that volunteering in Britain is well promoted, well resourced, well managed and above all, accessible to all.

The morning of this Policy and Practice Briefing will provide delegates a forum to discuss and be informed on current thinking and debates on volunteering in Britain, from both the Government and experts in the field. Delegates will gain a comprehensive view of current issues and thinking.

The afternoon will investigate successful examples of effective volunteer schemes, as well as case studies where the necessary volunteer supporting infrastructure has been developed. Delegates will gain ideas and insights to take back to their organisations and roles.

Speakers:

Alan Strickland – Senior Policy & Information Manager, Volunteering England
Veronique Jochum – Research Officer, NCVO
Carol Rawlings – Chair, National Association of Volunteer Service Managers
Martyn Rose – Chair, Big Society Network (invited)
Sally Connelly – Director, Getting On Board
Representative – Volunteer & Partnerships Team, Camden Borough Council

Participants will engage with the panel looking at issues including:

How can volunteering opportunities be better promoted and recognised?
How to improve volunteering infrastructure and increase innovation?
What funding is available for volunteer schemes at a national and local level?
To what extent is it acceptable or desirable to use volunteers to deliver public services?
